Nurses & Empowered Patients: Join the #CureConnect chat May 3!

A big reason I love social media is because the channels are a perfect opportunity to leverage awareness of all the innovative and creative work being done by people in my tribe. There is no better way to do that than through a Twitter chat!

The key reasons I enjoy Twitter chats?  I get to:

  • Listen and Learn from empowered patients & advocates
  • Connect with key influencers in my areas of interest
  • Discover new resources and innovative initiatives I can apply to my nursing practice

Imagine my excitement when my bffs at Cure Magazine (@cure_magazine)  and Oncology Nursing News (@OncNursingNews) invited me to help plan AND moderate the #CureConnect chat!  It will be held May 3 at 9pm EST!!!  We’ll be discussing hot topics from the recently concluded #ONSCongress (Oncology Nursing Society annual meeting - @OncologyNursing).

If you’ve never participated in a Twitter chat, this is your chance! It will be a great way to  learn more about Twitter chats….and oncology trends….with a friendly group.  Oh yeah, and make new friends!

If you don’t have a Twitter account yet, but want to get a jump-start ahead of the chat,  check out my blog post  Teach A Nurse To Tweet, you’ll find some very quick pointers to get you set up in no time!

The best way to participate in a Twitter chat is to use a Twitter chat tool like  Tweetchat.com  or  tchat.io Just enter the chat hashtag #CureConnect in the prompt box at the top of the page.

There are two great reasons to use a chat platform:

  1. The thread will only feature tweets by folks who are joining the #CureConnect chat.
  2. The hashtag #CureConnect will automatically be added to every tweet you post, so you don’t have to remember to add it as you go.

If you want to try it out ahead of time…go ahead and log in to tchat.io.   It will take you to the hashtag and you will see a stream of tweets from people who have already included the hashtag #CureConnect in their tweets.  (Most of them are promotional posts for the chat!)

How to Join The #CureConnect Chat

  1. Login to twitter
  2. Follow @cure_magazine, @OncNursingNews and @cbushrn
  3. Go to your favorite Twitter chat tool…like tchat.io…to participate in the chat (the platform may ask to link to your Twitter account, which you will want to do.)
  4. The chat hosts will post questions and topics, respond with your answers

Here is a run down of how the #CureConnect chat will work:

  1.  Introductions of Hosts & moderators
  2.  Everyone introduce themselves & where they are from!
  3.  Topics -
  • T1 We know exercise has many benefits to prevent cancer and recurrence. What works for you? What are the challenges?
  • T2 Let’s talk about integrative/alternative medicine. What do you find has been the most effective?
  • T3 Nurses, where do you send patients for education about nutrition? Patients, how do you think about nutrition?
  • T4 What are the biggest barriers to cancer therapy adherence?
  • T5 Nurses, what were your top takeaways from ONS? What do patients need to know?
  • T6 Patients, what are the top things you want to know from your oncology nurse?

A Note About Chat Etiquette

I love the way my friends @Intakeme, hosts of the Empowered #patientchat (@patientchat),   have articulated their chat guidelines.  So, in full disclosure,  what follows is a complete duplicate of their info.

Shout out to @btrfly12, AKA Christina Lizaso.  She moderates both #patientchat and #gyncsm (@gyncsm) two of my favorite chats.  I have learned a lot from watching her!

Chat Guidelines

  • The Chat is appropriate for patients, doctors, nurses, caregivers, mental health professionals, complementary care providers, loved ones of patients, basically anyone and everyone that cares about improving the healthcare system and a patient’s journey through it.
  • Please try to stay on topic.
  • No problem if you jump in late, just say hello and join in.
  • Please don’t pop in and promote a business or product. If it is relevant to the discussion, feel free to share. We have had some companies not participate but just tweet out links. Please participate in the chat instead. Chatters will click through to your profile if they’re interested in you.
  • Please say hello even if you’re just following along. It helps us gage if the chats are reaching people.
  • Please share the chats with other people and Retweet as much as you can to help spread the word.
  • Discussion topics and questions are asked with a T1, T2, T3, etc. Be sure to include the appropriate number in your answer, T1, T2, T3. For example: We ask, “T1. What is your favorite color? #CureConnect” You respond, “T1. Blue. #CureConnect”
  • Be sure to include the hashtag in your tweets and responses. If you use a tool like tchat.io, it will automatically append the #CureConnect hashtag to your tweets.
  • Feel free to challenge the status quo with your responses and be creative! However, be mindful and polite at the same time.
  • Be respectful, even if you disagree with someone. Focus on dialogue and solutions.
  • Please don’t discount other people’s stories and experiences. You may disagree & think your way is better. Honor others’ experiences that are different from your own.
  • As a chat grows in reach, it may become a trending topic on Twitter. When this happens, you may see unrelated posts in the chat feed. This happens because other people try to abuse trending topics on Twitter and promote unrelated causes and spam. It is still safe to participate in the chat. If this happens, you can BLOCK or REPORT the abusive tweet directly in Twitter. See Twitter’s abuse report guidelines

How do I locate Twitter chats on healthcare topics?

Lucky for us, we have our friends at Symplur who built The Healthcare Hashtag Project.  This is quite literally the single most important tool I use to locate healthcare topic hashtags, conferences and chats. They make it easy to keep track of upcoming health related chats.  Check out a schedule of the upcoming chats – Healthcare Tweet Chats.
